World peace is fragile – it’s no joke but we can all help

September 17, 2017 by Andrew Marshall Leave a Comment

World peace is on a knife edge. The Secretary General of NATO has described the current state of affairs as “the most dangerous point in a generation“. That’s alarming, but it certainly isn’t hopeless.

World leaders need a hand, and it’s down to you and me, kidworld peace children

When things are this volatile, we look to the world’s national leaders for solutions. Like children, we turn to mum and dad to sort out the mess we have made. But the leaders are human beings, too. They have weaknesses as well as strengths, as do we. Their positions of power and authority come not from some divine right but from the people who place them there, whether by election or by default. From that point alone, we all bear some responsibility for world peace. Looking more deeply, there is the question of collective consciousness, and that’s where we really can do something effective.

Consciousness is the key to world peace

In spite of all the time and energy national leaders put into their work, we’re still in trouble. Why? Because humanity’s consciousness as a whole is immature. We’re still in kindergarten. Living with the attitude “what’s in it for me and my friends?” will no longer hack it. Looking after number one does not create stability. A touch of selflessness and kindness, on the other hand, can cure a great deal.

A more altruistic society is essential

Governments know this but struggle because they reflect the consciousness of the country they represent. Altruism may be an ideal but it is impossible for a nation even to move in that direction if its millions of citizens have no taste for it. But we can choose to be kinder and more compassionate. We can choose to live ethically. Many do so already but it is an attitude that needs to become mainstream rather than a niche fashion. Then a more altruistic society becomes possible and world peace more than a pipe dream.

The importance of loving kindness in society is examined more deeply in the book Awakening Heart: The Blissful Path to Self Realisation

World view: why what we see has to change

May 19, 2017 by Andrew Marshall Leave a Comment

There is a truism that says the world is as we are. After all, the only world we can ever know is what we experience through our senses, our perceptions, beliefs, judgements and so on. How the world is to anyone depends on what is sometimes called their view. Due to the vacillations of the mind and the emotions, that view changes many times a day.

Our view is murky: it needs clarity

Our view of the world, however informed we think we might be, is World viewinevitably wrong. If we are driving a car, the view of the road will depend on a number of factors. The windscreen needs to be kept clear, our eyesight good and our focus and attention must be on where we are going.

Similarly, in life our view of what is in front of us must also be clear. That requires work on the heart as well as the head. Unless heart and mind are crystal clear and wide open, what we see is bound to be a distortion of reality.

Let go and let your heart melt

There are two essential areas above all else that affect how we react to the world. The first is how we see ourselves. The other is how we view other people. These are like two sides of a coin – each necessarily depends on the other.

Our heart needs to be soft and relaxed, at ease and accepting. If we are angry with the world or want to escape from it, it’s a sign we have some work to do.

Love and let live

We are not separate from the rest of the universe, but that is how we normally act and react. Our view of other people as being separate from each other and, indeed, separate from us is just as wrong. It is an ancient, entrenched view – and a false one. The cause of most of humanity’s problems lies here. We are all of the same essence, different forms but the same. If we know this, we can love and let live.

A gradual process

To change the way we see things is an enormous step. It is also the single most important and significant thing we can ever do. Because it is so enormous, we have to undertake it carefully and remain focused. There will be countless times when we feel we have fallen backwards. We mustn’t give up when that happens, otherwise we will simply “revert to type”.

Just water

When we begin, we may be surprised how stuck we are in our outlook. It can be a little frightening. It seems easier to hold onto our traditional view. But once we become aware of our rigidity, we can begin to soften it and gradually let our old beliefs melt. Then we will feel better. The world is not an insurmountable problem. Ice is, after all, just water once it has thawed.

Pollution: why the real danger is in our own minds

April 23, 2017 by Andrew Marshall Leave a Comment

Pollution is always high on the agenda, and quite rightly so. The planet as we know it is in great danger. But the source of the pollution isn’t in the physical. It lies in the mind or the collective consciousness of humanity. As a race, we have allowed it to happen. We all know this but so far have failed to generate sufficient willpower to reverse it. The problem of pollution, and its solution, lies in the mind. That’s even closer to home than your own wheelie bin.

Like pollution, there is more to the mind than you think

If we ever try to examine the nature of our mind, we will probably find that there is no single thing we can actually identify as mind. Instead, there is a collection of interacting and interdependent faculties or components.

The mindstream

The most apparent and obvious aspect is the chattering of thoughts that we experience almost incessantly. One thought yields another and it is difficult to say when one thought ends and another begins. A pollution thoughts streambetter description might be that we have streams of thinking and a rather apt term used in some Eastern teachings is mindstream. As we shall see, this is susceptible to pollution.

We don’t change our minds – the mind is constantly changing

Our mindstreams are constantly changing, being influenced by the mindstreams of others. If we are influenced by something we read or hear, it is an effect of the mindstream of the writer or speaker. In turn, he or she will have been influenced. If we look deeply enough, we will find that there is no beginning and no end to these thought processes. At every stage, too, there is the possibility of pollution.

Choice and responsibility

Just as a stream of water collects minerals, debris and pollutants on its journey, our mindstreams also pick up thoughts, ideas and beliefs as we go through life. Unlike water, we have some choice in what we expose ourselves to, and how much.

The amount of information that is available these days is frightening. We need to be choosy and, the less rubbish in our minds, the better we will feel about ourselves and others. We will be less likely to pollute the mindstreams of others with our own detritus and, who knows, may even inspire with our positivity!

Power: how to realise yours for a better world

February 5, 2017 by Andrew Marshall Leave a Comment

Power is extraordinary, isn’t it? People with power are making the news left, right and centre at the moment. So much so that we might think that ordinary people – the likes of you and me – are insignificant. If we fell off the face of the planet tomorrow, would the Earth shudder? In my case certainly, there would be no big bulletins. But powerful people are different. When they sneeze or cough, others jump.

Where do powerful people get their power from?

What makes someone powerful?power gorilla Historically, it came from physical strength. Just as in the animal kingdom there are fights to determine the dominant male or female, in more barbaric times there were battles for strength. Leaders emerged because people followed them, either for protection or out of fear. Wars are a remnant of this crude approach.

As humanity evolves, there is a gradual shift from brutish strength to a more subtle phase. Power now, more than at any other time, is the ability to change minds – the manipulation of mass consciousness.

It takes three to tango

A leader can only remain while others, the followers, allow it. The head of a democracy is there only by permission. Power is a loan, not a gift or a right.

So there are three aspects, not two, to a position of power: 1. a leader 2. followers or the led, and 3. the relationship between the two. 1 & 2 are visible but 3 is a matter of consciousness. Without that bridge, 1 & 2 cannot exist, just as a tango cannot take place without the dancers, and there are no dancers without the tango.

The world may be alarmed at the choice of president of the American people. But it was their choice and was a product of their collective consciousness. He was put, and remains, in power by the mandate of ordinary folk.

Why we must help create a peaceful collective consciousnesspower common good

We may feel pretty helpless to do much to influence the way of the world, yet there is much we can do. And the main thing is that we have to find our own peace.

If we take care of our own consciousness and make it strong and peaceful, we contribute to the consciousness of the whole. It’s automatic, like pouring clear water into a muddy pool. If enough of us do that, the muddy waters become clearer and lighter. That’s much more useful than stirring the mud with a dirty stick.

Find your heart first

It may well be that we need to act, to speak, to protest or just do things differently. But we have to do so from a position of inner peace. If we are in touch with our full presence, we can help very much. We will be guided by our intuition and less likely to make mistakes. Passionate we may be, but from the heart, not the gut.

Living from the heart, we harm no-one nor wish harm. Only the good of the whole is of interest. Fearlessly able to love and be loved, we exude peace. Then we influence. Now that’s real power.

There’s more on finding peace for the good of the whole in this book.

Heart: why we have to listen to what it says

August 14, 2016 by Andrew Marshall Leave a Comment

Today, perhaps more than at any other time, there is a great search going on. We appear irrevocably immersed in consumerism, thirsty for ever-more sophisticated technology to satisfy our demands for easy living or amusement. Yet we all know, deep down, that we can never permanently fulfil these desires. We just put them on hold for a while, merely to resurface later as wants or cravings. This is just going round in circles. It might be fun for a while, but it’s like a dog chasing its tail. There’s no progress. To break the pattern, we need to be in touch with and listen to what our heart has to say.

Heart is our essence and we need to find it

In order to be truly fulfilled, we need to express ourselves utterly and completely. This means uncovering our heart essencetrue essence and allowing it to blossom. Until, in effect, we become that essence – the most natural expression of which is love.

There is an enormous need for love, both in our individual lives and in the world as a whole. But love can only flourish in humanity if it blossoms in the heart of each of us. The process of awakening the heart is about following the most natural path to our true nature or essence. By learning to love fully and completely, we can become totally fulfilled. By loving with full awareness in the present moment, we can be truly happy.

Your heart needs you to unlearn

The blissful path of the heart begins with unlearning many of the beliefs that society has built around love – beliefs that condition most of the human population. We need to be able to distinguish between true love and the emotions that are often identified as love, but which eventually cause pain. More importantly, we need to transform the way we think. We can overcome the barriers that prevent us from feeling love fully – the internal barriers of indifference and negativity.

By cultivating the qualities of the heart, the elixir of life is able to course through our whole being. In turn, this leads to the bliss that comes with self-realisation.
