Why? A child’s laser-like question that hones in on everything

July 13, 2019 by Andrew Marshall Leave a Comment

child question why“Why?” is a question invented by very small children to wear down adults into submission. Everyone who has had, or has looked after, young children knows this to be the case. Any and every explanation is followed by another why? It’s a brilliant question and one that as adults we don’t use enough. Or answer truthfully enough.

Why truth matters so much

Politicians lie. We know that. But they are not the only ones. Lying is rife throughout all human affairs. It always has been and, until there is such a thing as an enlightened society, always will. Even with climate change threatening the world’s ecosystem as never before, the lies continue. We have to keep challenging and we have to keep asking why?

Why - Greta Thunberg

And don’t forget to ask yourself

Like the child querying everything, we need to ask it of ourselves, not just others. We can only have an enlightened society if everyone lives truthfully. As individuals, some self-examination can be very revealing. Why am I doing this? Why do I keep doing it? What makes me resist change? What is my real motive in everything? It sounds quite painful but actually, like learning to say no sometimes, it can be a huge relief. And we can stop wasting huge amounts of energy on things we don’t need to acquire or don’t need to do. That’s better for the world, too.

Learning how to do less to accomplish more is an essential key to life. The Art of Not Doing is a book about just that.

Love: why cosmic glue stops us falling apart

November 25, 2017 by Andrew Marshall Leave a Comment

Love is cosmic glueLove is an amazing expression of cosmic glue – the innate universal force that binds everything together. That may not sound very romantic but romance is not the same thing. Don’t we say that we feel a connection with someone we love? When we talk of such matters, we usually try to describe a mixture of feelings or emotions and a state of mind. But that’s simply because we can. Birds and animals, on the other hand, probably don’t discuss the finer nuances of relationships – they just get on with things. Either way, whether we have the capacity to analyse or not, sentient beings – animals and us humans – generally thrive in groups.

Sticking together is essential for humanity

We depend on society and society depends on cohesiveness. Despite being riddled with imperfections, imbalance and injustice, humanity survives and carries on. As though there were an invisible magnet, we stick together. That’s how life has always worked, and probably always will.

Our own wellbeing, too, depends on love

Where there is altruism and cooperation, society not only functions but flourishes. On an individual level, our mental and emotional health, and very often the physical, too, improves when we love. That’s because caring for our environment and being compassionate for both ourselves and others helps us to feel whole. We flourish rather than exist. Even the cells in our body can vibrate happiness! Yes, love is very practical. Everyone benefits. It’s good stuff, this glue. And it’s free.

The importance of love and compassion in society are explored in my book Awakening Heart – The Blissful Path to Self-Realisation

World view: why what we see has to change

May 19, 2017 by Andrew Marshall Leave a Comment

There is a truism that says the world is as we are. After all, the only world we can ever know is what we experience through our senses, our perceptions, beliefs, judgements and so on. How the world is to anyone depends on what is sometimes called their view. Due to the vacillations of the mind and the emotions, that view changes many times a day.

Our view is murky: it needs clarity

Our view of the world, however informed we think we might be, is World viewinevitably wrong. If we are driving a car, the view of the road will depend on a number of factors. The windscreen needs to be kept clear, our eyesight good and our focus and attention must be on where we are going.

Similarly, in life our view of what is in front of us must also be clear. That requires work on the heart as well as the head. Unless heart and mind are crystal clear and wide open, what we see is bound to be a distortion of reality.

Let go and let your heart melt

There are two essential areas above all else that affect how we react to the world. The first is how we see ourselves. The other is how we view other people. These are like two sides of a coin – each necessarily depends on the other.

Our heart needs to be soft and relaxed, at ease and accepting. If we are angry with the world or want to escape from it, it’s a sign we have some work to do.

Love and let live

We are not separate from the rest of the universe, but that is how we normally act and react. Our view of other people as being separate from each other and, indeed, separate from us is just as wrong. It is an ancient, entrenched view – and a false one. The cause of most of humanity’s problems lies here. We are all of the same essence, different forms but the same. If we know this, we can love and let live.

A gradual process

To change the way we see things is an enormous step. It is also the single most important and significant thing we can ever do. Because it is so enormous, we have to undertake it carefully and remain focused. There will be countless times when we feel we have fallen backwards. We mustn’t give up when that happens, otherwise we will simply “revert to type”.

Just water

When we begin, we may be surprised how stuck we are in our outlook. It can be a little frightening. It seems easier to hold onto our traditional view. But once we become aware of our rigidity, we can begin to soften it and gradually let our old beliefs melt. Then we will feel better. The world is not an insurmountable problem. Ice is, after all, just water once it has thawed.

Light lies ahead – we just have to see it

January 9, 2017 by Andrew Marshall Leave a Comment

Light is a real tonic, isn’t it, especially as now when the days are short and often dark? The world of humanity seems to be in something of a dark place at the moment. We need some light, some joy and something to look forward to.

Light up an ostrich today!

Ostriches are extraordinary birds. They are reputed (wrongly) to hide their heads in the sand when trouble approaches.light ostrich

I know a number of people, and you probably do, too, who refuse to read newspapers or watch or listen to news on television or radio. There is merit in that because what we are served up as a picture of reality in the media largely focuses on what is wrong. Apart from being negative in nature, there is the added factor of news manipulation, so we don’t even know if it is correct anyway.

So we can probably agree that news bulletins are generally neither very bright nor uplifting. But if we only want good news or none, and choose to ignore the existence of human suffering, maybe we too have become an ostrich.

We become what we digest – in the mind as well as the body

The old adage is “we are what we eat”. We know that what we take in as food and drink affects the body. It’s not just what we swallow, either. What we breathe affects us, as statistics on poor air quality and health clearly show.

But in many respects, the mind is more important than the body because it dictates everything we say or do. It is responsible for everything we think and all that we make of our world. The mind largely governs our feelings and our moods – it controls our life. It needs light.

The media is an aspect of our environment

Environment is much more than our physical surroundings. Our mental environment is just as important. If we keep taking in information that is predominantly negative, there is a danger that we could become gloomy, too. At the very least, it will sap our energy.

Positive people carriers of light?

Positive people tend to uplift us. They create a light environment. They may be a pain at times, too, but usually only because their lightness and cheerfulness accentuate our shadows.

light aheadEveryone has light within them. The difference between a positive person and a negative one is how that light manifests. The former carries light and passes it on. The latter chooses not to.

There is more light than dark

The world is not Trump, Putin, Brexit, the NHS or anything else. The world is as we are – as we perceive it. If we look around, there is far more goodness being done by ordinary people than there is bad. By making a habit of seeing that, we create a positive mental environment for ourselves which affects those around us. Our words and behaviour reflect increasing amounts of light. Isn’t that why we are here? Happy new year!

More on social responsibility and the need for love in society can be found in Awakening Heart: The Blissful Path to Self-Realisation. If you fancy a long read, I recommend Matthieu Ricard’s Altruism.

Mindful living isn’t easy but it’s worth it

October 1, 2016 by Andrew Marshall Leave a Comment

Mindful living is not easy. It means overcoming the tendency that we all have to be partly absent from whatever we are doing.

But if we want to be really happy, we have to love and, in order to love, we have to be fully present.

Actually, although it is not easy to be mindful, it is the simplest thing in the world. Instead of doing more, we have to do less.

Most things in life require us to act. In order to achieve anything, it seems we have to do more. Then we become hooked in the spiral of doing more and more. Or we become disheartened or feel guilty because we haven’t achieved what we think we should have.

mindful living stimuliA mad world makes loving more difficult

Our modern world does not particularly support mindfulness, either. Despite technology that enables almost anything that we could wish for to be achieved or obtained, our modern lifestyle detracts from an environment that encourages mindfulness. Stimuli – advertising, radio, television, mobile telephones, e-mails, the internet and so on – bombard us at every turn. The modern mind generally works too fast because it races from one thing to another without paying a great deal of attention to almost anything. One major effect of this is that we are not generally very good at expressing love.

Mindful living means being

Fortunately, there is a middle way. Mindful living is not so much about doing things as about being. We simply have to be in order to be a full human being. Being busy can be very good, of course. Through our various occupations, we learn skills and serve our fellow human beings. This is all good. But most people are so active in their minds that they find it very difficult to be still. Even when we have the chance to sit and do nothing for a while, the majority of folk will look for something to do.

But we can (not) do itmindful living happy

All is not lost, however. No matter how busy we are or think we are, it is possible to become more mindful. It doesn’t matter whether a person has an IQ of 70 or 150. Everyone can enjoy greater awareness – and so greater fulfilment – in life. In fact, sometimes people with very active intellects find mindful living more difficult at first because their minds are always arguing, forever differentiating between this and that, and making judgements. But, like monetary wealth, more of something does not always bring greater happiness and an overactive intellect is a case in point. Nevertheless, once the purity of natural awareness is experienced, the joy – and relief – is equally great for everyone. And the loving is easy.
