Why freedom and happiness are here now, if we want them to be

August 8, 2021 by Andrew Marshall 2 Comments

Freedom and happiness are fundamental universal human rights. In spite of that, these basic qualities have been rather elusive for much of the world for quite some time now. The UK Government purported to hand its citizens “freedom day” on the 19th July this year. An odd turn of phrase, some might think, if not a little ironic.

Real freedom is here, not somewhere out there

Liberation is much more than escaping legal or physical restrictions, though, and if we really want to be free and happy, we have to transcend normal thinking. Real freedom can only occur in the mind. It is as much an inner state as an external one. There are stories of people who have been wrongly incarcerated yet, due to their spiritual training, they have felt completely free. Such are extraordinary people, of course, but there is no reason why we cannot train ourselves to be freer and happier.

The big problem? The conditioned mind

The way we think and react to things depends on how the mind is conditioned. That conditioning comes mainly from our past experiences and what we have been taught or led to believe. At the root of all that is the very basic sense of “I”, which gives rise to a belief in “me” and “mine”. The mind is very clever and will do anything to defend itself and the personality, the “I”, it has created.

Selflessness brings freedom

To lessen the mind’s grip, we need to cultivate selflessness. Instead of maintaining our imagined position as the centre of our own little universe, which takes a great deal of energy and effort, we might try letting go a little. It’s a very relaxing thing to do; quite liberating, in fact.

The real crisis

It is selfishness, not Nature, that has driven humanity into the throes of a climate crisis and only a reversal of that will free us from it. It is far more of a threat than coronavirus. As individuals, we cannot change the world overnight but we can change ourselves. By beginning to train the mind to be calm, clear and open, we can be free wherever we are.

Melting the ice: eliminating indifference

December 21, 2020 by Andrew Marshall 2 Comments

melting iceThanks in part to pandemic restrictions, a source of enjoyment for me is going for walks in our local area. There is much rural beauty nearby and there is delight to be found, too, in the surrounding streets. I feel happy when I am walking because the world magically opens up when we look more closely at things.

A layer of ice

Many of the people who are also out walking seem very friendly and respond warmly to a smile and a wave or a hello. On the other hand, quite a few pass by without acknowledging anyone else. Instead of warmth, it is as though there is a glaze of ice, a certain aloofness. There are many reasons why that may be and, after all, any of us can be a little withdrawn or grumpy sometimes.

More important than the response of passers-by to each other, though, is the general human trait of indifference towards those we don’t know, whether individuals or a group. We can often fail to see the light in another person and miss so much. And the reason isn’t somewhere out there; it’s inside, in our own minds.

If it’s in the mind, fix the mind

Indifference is something we urgently need to fix because it results in an absence of joy, of love and a lack of positive action. It is the cause of all apathy. I was once given a piece of advice that, when you see a stranger, to imagine you once knew him or her very well. Imagine that some time in the past, you had a very close connection, now forgotten, when they showed you great kindness. This simple mental adjustment can begin to expand the mind and tickle the heart, melting any ice that may be lingering.

It’s wise not to speak of it because it is an inner practice but, make no mistake, this little technique is very profound if we make it a habit.

Thank you for reading this. Sadly, no courses will be running until circumstances permit. May you have a joyful Christmas season and a happy and healthy new year. Andrew

Why? A child’s laser-like question that hones in on everything

July 13, 2019 by Andrew Marshall Leave a Comment

child question why“Why?” is a question invented by very small children to wear down adults into submission. Everyone who has had, or has looked after, young children knows this to be the case. Any and every explanation is followed by another why? It’s a brilliant question and one that as adults we don’t use enough. Or answer truthfully enough.

Why truth matters so much

Politicians lie. We know that. But they are not the only ones. Lying is rife throughout all human affairs. It always has been and, until there is such a thing as an enlightened society, always will. Even with climate change threatening the world’s ecosystem as never before, the lies continue. We have to keep challenging and we have to keep asking why?

Why - Greta Thunberg

And don’t forget to ask yourself

Like the child querying everything, we need to ask it of ourselves, not just others. We can only have an enlightened society if everyone lives truthfully. As individuals, some self-examination can be very revealing. Why am I doing this? Why do I keep doing it? What makes me resist change? What is my real motive in everything? It sounds quite painful but actually, like learning to say no sometimes, it can be a huge relief. And we can stop wasting huge amounts of energy on things we don’t need to acquire or don’t need to do. That’s better for the world, too.

Learning how to do less to accomplish more is an essential key to life. The Art of Not Doing is a book about just that.

Love: why cosmic glue stops us falling apart

November 25, 2017 by Andrew Marshall Leave a Comment

Love is cosmic glueLove is an amazing expression of cosmic glue – the innate universal force that binds everything together. That may not sound very romantic but romance is not the same thing. Don’t we say that we feel a connection with someone we love? When we talk of such matters, we usually try to describe a mixture of feelings or emotions and a state of mind. But that’s simply because we can. Birds and animals, on the other hand, probably don’t discuss the finer nuances of relationships – they just get on with things. Either way, whether we have the capacity to analyse or not, sentient beings – animals and us humans – generally thrive in groups.

Sticking together is essential for humanity

We depend on society and society depends on cohesiveness. Despite being riddled with imperfections, imbalance and injustice, humanity survives and carries on. As though there were an invisible magnet, we stick together. That’s how life has always worked, and probably always will.

Our own wellbeing, too, depends on love

Where there is altruism and cooperation, society not only functions but flourishes. On an individual level, our mental and emotional health, and very often the physical, too, improves when we love. That’s because caring for our environment and being compassionate for both ourselves and others helps us to feel whole. We flourish rather than exist. Even the cells in our body can vibrate happiness! Yes, love is very practical. Everyone benefits. It’s good stuff, this glue. And it’s free.

The importance of love and compassion in society are explored in my book Awakening Heart – The Blissful Path to Self-Realisation

It really is a matter of choice

October 31, 2015 by Andrew Marshall Leave a Comment

ChoiceIf you wish to be happier than you are now, you must have the will to do something about it. The choice really is yours. It just has to be the right choice.

The problem with seeking happiness for ourselves alone is that it is likely to give rise to a certain degree of selfishness. Then our thoughts become focused on ourselves. We try to create a bubble around us that keeps unhappiness factors away and, perhaps unwittingly, we become very insular. This may work for a short time but eventually a deep sense of dissatisfaction will start nagging at us from inside.

If we want to be truly happy and content, we have to be less concerned with “me”. In fact, the more we are concerned with others’ welfare and their happiness, the happier we will become. In other words, we do the opposite of what the ego is pushing us to do or avoid doing. It’s a universal law and it works. When we take the focus away from ourselves, we take the focus off the things in life which we blame for … well, blame for anything, really.

If you have any doubts as to whether it is right or responsible to be happier, let’s start with the thought that a happier human being is a better human being. Remember that moods are infectious and happy people tend to uplift others. Some people have the gift of being able to see the energy fields around people and they will tell you that a generous, outward looking person has vibrant, outgoing energy. But you don’t have to see that to know it. You can sense it. You know what it is like to be in the company of a warm-hearted person.

Vibrate happiness!

A friend sent us a quote from the late great Maharishi Mahesh Yogi: “I see only one ‘do’ in life and that is: vibrate happiness. Increase the happiness within yourself and within your surroundings because the sole purpose of creation is the increase of happiness…”

Whether it is a throwback from more austere times that has conditioned them I don’t know but many people seem to have a distinct reservation about being happy. It is almost as though they think that happiness is wrong and that they are not meeting their responsibility as human beings unless they feel and look glum. Many children, unfortunately, are brought up in families which are not happy and innocent joyfulness is very quickly lost.

We have a responsibility to ourselves and others to be happy. Inside, we have a “happiness switch”. We just have to find it and choose to use it. Sometimes it is simply a question of choosing to throw that switch, even when everything around us seems to be falling apart. There is work to do, of course, but for now we just have to decide which direction we want to go in – towards happiness or away from it.
